08 ChatGPT Work

Direct complete research and deliverables

Work is ChatGPT's agent for longer tasks: it gathers context, analyzes information, and creates editable materials while you supervise the process.

01

What ChatGPT Work is

The essential difference is not that it writes more: it works toward a verifiable outcome.

ChatGPT offers three complementary experiences. Chat handles questions, search, and quick conversation; Work takes on research, analysis, and material creation; Codex specializes in software development and repository work.

Work can create or edit documents, spreadsheets, presentations, reports, analyses, and Sites. You can follow progress, answer questions, redirect the work, and approve important actions while it runs.

02

How to get started

Frame the work as a professional assignment, not an isolated question.

  1. Open ChatGPT on web, mobile, or the new desktop app and choose Work in the mode switcher.

  2. Start a new conversation or open a project to retain related files, instructions, and context.

  3. Describe the final outcome, attach sources, and specify the format and destination.

  4. State what must remain unchanged: formulas, structure, branding, tone, order, or source data.

  5. Follow progress, answer the agent's questions, and review the file before sharing it or making decisions.

03

Six useful use cases

Work adds the most value when a task combines research, transformation, and a concrete deliverable.

Market report

Gather recent sources, cross-check claims, and structure findings for a decision.

Deliverable Report with executive summary, source table, and risks

Document from a template

Use a reference file to preserve tone, order, and brand conventions.

Deliverable Editable document that follows the template

Data analysis

Clean a table, define metrics, calculate formulas, and explain anomalies.

Deliverable Spreadsheet with formulas, charts, and conclusions

Executive presentation

Turn research or notes into a concise narrative with visual checks.

Deliverable Presentation with structure, evidence, and next steps

Internal Site

Turn data and processes into a dashboard, tracker, calendar, or interactive report.

Deliverable Private Site to review before publishing

Recurring monitoring

Schedule a task to run once, repeat, react to a trigger, or monitor change.

Deliverable Periodic update with criteria and result history

04

The brief that works best

Six blocks turn a vague intention into work the agent can execute and you can evaluate.

Outcome

The file or decision that must be finished.

Audience

Who will use it and what they already know.

Sources

Which files, apps, links, and dates it may consult.

Constraints

What it must preserve and must not do.

Criteria

How accuracy, clarity, and usefulness will be measured.

Delivery

Format, location, and required review.

Example assignment
Objective: create an executive report on monthly sales performance to decide next quarter's priorities.

Audience: sales leadership; they know the business but not the dataset details.

Sources: use only the attached workbook and cite the sheet and range for every figure.

Deliverable: no more than 5 pages with a summary, 3 charts, anomalies, risks, and 5 prioritized actions.

Keep the original data and formulas unchanged. Do not publish or send anything.

Before finishing, reconcile every figure and list all assumptions or missing data.

05

Chat, Work, or Codex

Switching mode is not increasing power: it is choosing the right tool for the job.

06

Oversight and quality

A finished-looking deliverable can still be wrong. Review is part of the workflow, not an optional extra.

  1. Grant access only to the files and applications the task needs.

  2. Ask for traceable sources and check figures, formulas, citations, and dates against the originals.

  3. Write down what it must not publish, send, overwrite, or change without approval.

  4. Use reference files for one task and templates when the workflow must repeat consistently.

  5. Review the result in its final application—Docs, Sheets, Slides, or a local file—before sharing.

  6. Keep human oversight for legal, financial, medical, employment, or other high-impact decisions.

On desktop, local files remain on the device unless you choose to move or share them. Work on web and mobile cannot directly access files on your computer.
